JANUARY
LAKE FAYETTE TOURNAMENT - JAN 05
Wow!!! What else can you say about a Lake as great as Fayette County. The weather was just right for the group of guys traveling from far north, loaded with their weapons of choice…..rods, reels, and tackle…..ready to meet up with the green creatures of the water.
The fish gods were good to many of the Centex bunch……and this years points from the Lake have totaled more than any other trip combined. Among those in attendance was famed “Stacy ”Diesel” Twiggs from BassMaster. Stacy is a legend with CenTex, ..past Club Secretary, past VP, past Pres, past State Pres, past everything, and the only member to have the distinguished honor of “Life Member in CenTex BassHunters.” The pressure was on to for our group to match the fishing acumen of the returning King of Cen-Tex BassHunters. As the legend goes, “Diesel” proved he had not lost the touch for the fortune that lead him to far-away Alabama. Stacy, it will always be an honor to have you in our midst, and for all new members…..please go by and introduce yourself at the upcoming tournament.
Well, as you all know………Mr. Jerry Toney and all his might proved very much that you can “talk the talk and walk the walk”…..let’s just hope he can hang on to those words as the year progresses. Congratulations to Jerry…….and hopefully he has thanked him many mentors who have given him experience and guidance. The team totals are listed and as no big surprise, crankbaits, rattletraps, senko’s and finesse worms were big hits with the fish this time of the year.
Big Bass honors went to myself, with a nice almost 24 inch fish. Well, it is on to the next quest, Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas. If you have not gotten your gear ready, better tie on some heavy line for the hogs in this water. Mexican or American flavor of fish will not matter, all of these border fish are ready to test your strength and line.
The Texas Tournament Trail is coming up the next weekend after our club tournament, and as luck would have it…..some of our very own membership will be competing. In following Cen-Tex protocol, we will discuss the day’s successes and failures at the boat ramp after weigh-in, rather than waiting until the next meeting.
I just wanted to take this time to say a big thank you for all those that voted to bring me to be able to write this bit of news and keep up with the monthly points, etc. It has been a bit of a challenge, as I have recently changed jobs and studying for a national certification….but, you know the old TEXAS saying….get’r done. If you ever need anything or I can help you in any way, call or email me and I will do all I can to assist.
Remember, the BOD is meeting at Whataburger this Wednesday night.
1st Rick Zendejas / Jerry Toney 38.12lbs
2nd Randy Sitz / Quinten Twiggs 33.12lbs
3rd Ervin Woodard / Roger Carr 30.12lbs
Big Bass: Elton Brock 7.0 lbs
Big Stringer: Jerry Toney 22.08lbs
Next Tournament is Feb 12, 13 @ Amistad Lake.
FEBRUARY
LAKE AMISTAD TOURNAMENT - FEB 05
As the story goes, someone always is able to unlock the key to success, and this trip proved no different. None other than your Club President….… ( Randy Fleeman….FleeDaddy ) and his mighty handy assistant, Mr. Ron Seevers topped the two-day scales with an impressive team weight of 54.08 lbs. The secret to the success was found way up the Rio Grand River, nestled among the Mexican Canyons. The fish were staging in this area, and the bite was real lite, hardly detectable. Contrary to popular opinion, Randy proved finally, that he does not need Doc Stutes to catch a fish……..in a tournament. J
Other teams had reports of upper and mid-lake success on Crankbaits, C-rigs, and Texas rigs on soft plastics in watermelon colors. Most teams targeted the grass that could be located and the points. The lake was near full pool levels and I am sure our club left many of these American and Mexican green gods in areas yet to be discovered. The days were not perfect, but the scenery was absolutely beautiful. God created some really beautiful things in this world we live in, and we all need to take time to view his creation. I was amazed at the peaceful scenery on the Mexican side of the lake, the Canyons that seemed to appear in the distance……..the beautiful clear water…..and the smile on everyone of your faces after eating that wonderful meal provided by Chef Kenny. How much better can it get?
Big Bass honors on Day 1 went to James McDonald with a nice 5.5 oz fish, claiming the carry over pot of gold (now that was sweet). Myself and James targeted isolated islands with crankbaits and soft plastics in the Evans Creek and California Creek areas. Day 2 big bass went to the Official Cen-Tex Basshunters Chef……….Mr. Kenney Barfield with a hefty 6.9 oz fish. Kenny and his trusty partner, Robert Brown, located this bruiser near a point in the Box Canyon area. The really big hogs in this water did not truly come forth for the Cen-Tex men, but by next month, there should be some hefty sacks weighed in at Lake Waco.
Three of our Club Members and a guest to our club, fished The Texas Tournament Trail at Lake Amistad the very next weekend. Although, none captured any monetary rewards, all were thankful for the help the club provided.
Cen-Tex will be holding two upcoming open tournaments, March 5 @ Stillhouse and April 30th @ Lake Belton. We need for everyone to get the word out on this. Pull copies of the flyer from the group yahoo page and pass them around. Contact anyone you do business with and request a donation. These events really help get Cen-Tex recognized as a leader in the Central Texas area.

MARCH
LAKE WACO TOURNAMENT - MAR 05
What can you say, it either rains or it shines for the guys from CenTex Basshunters. This month was no different at the fabulous LAKE WACO. Now that was a tournament……….huh? From the looks of the weight sheet, it appears to be the worst total combined weights for the club in almost a year. Not many of our fine group could unlock the key to the safe and let those ole’ bass fill up the livewells of the CenTex Basshunters.
There reports of catches earlier in the week and others that pre-fished did not fare so well. Tournament day, the weather was decent and the wind did not seem to get the lake in too much of a stir. So, at least most had something to be thankful for. May this serve as a reminder, to vote wisely at the meetings…….for you may very well eat some crow. kaw, kaw, kaw……Bruce Davis. J
I had the pleasure of being in the boat with Jeff “G-man” Giarrizzo, and serving as his “official” net man. I wasn’t too busy for most of the day, but on four different occasions, Jeff was able to pull some hefty brutes from amuck the thickest stuff you could image putting your lure into. The day was not a total loss for yours truly, but I did not manage to boat a keeper. When we pulled up to the weigh-in, there were many dismal looks upon the face of some fierce competitors from this club. Jeff and I caught fish on spinnerbaits in shallow water, and watermelon soft-plastics placed in very tight places.
Big Bass honors went to Jeff Giarrizzo with a nice 6.9 oz fish, claiming the big fish pot. Guys, it always pays to have the net ready, and make sure you get into the pot. The individual total weight was also “Jeff’s” prize for the day. I am fortunate to have been re-educated, and I will not forget it too soon.
Well, fellows………..on to the next conquest…..beautiful Lake O. H. Ivie….that will be one sweet lake, and from all reports so far the lake is coming to pre-1998 levels. Lot’s of new water.
Congratulations to our Top-Six team this year at Lake Richland Chambers. Don Schuetze caught a monster 10+ fish to set the proper tone for our team. The next two days did not fare so well for our team, as some other competitors decided to display some unsportsmanlike conduct, and move to our guys main fishing spot.
Cen-Tex will be holding an upcoming open tournament, May 1 @ Lake Belton. We need for everyone to get the word out on this. Pull copies of the flyer from the group yahoo page and pass them around. Contact anyone you do business with and request a donation. These events really help get Cen-Tex recognized as a leader in the Central Texas area.
1st Jeff “G-Man” Giarrizzo / Elton Brock 13.08lbs
2nd Tom “Big Chief” Yester / Mark Zendejas 6.04lbs
3rd Roy Smith / Kyle Kirkes 5.14lbs
Big Bass: Jeff Giarrizzo 6.9 lbs
Big Stringer: Jeff Giarrizzo 13.08lbs
Next Tournament is April 9 @ Lake OH Ivie.
APRIL
LAKE O.H. IVIE TOURNAMENT - APRIL 05
A cool April morning, found the Cen-Tex Basshunters, who had traveled from far away, greeted with the beautiful scenery of a full Lake O.H. Ivie. The group of men that ventured to this part of West Texas found the water to be clear and the lake full of hungry anglers ready to take their share of tugs from the green fish from beneath the waters. There were recent reports of small catches, and certainly not the normal fishery of O.H. Ivie of past years. A good friend had commented to me that it seemed that the PH level in the lake was not optimial in areas due to the newly flooded salt cedars and thus the bass were not in those areas. Never the less, the group of devoted anglers from Central Texas were present to take the prize of fortune that laid ahead at the 3 p.m. weigh-in.
Several of our members were noticeably absent and the Board of Director’s encourage’s each of you to attend the upcoming meeting and participate in the upcoming events.
Wow! Two months in a row, I had the pleasure of fishing with Cen-Tex’s two top of the leader board members, with this month being, the man of yellow…no pun intended…..Randy Fleeman. Now, after the severe lashing I took last month on Lake Waco, needless to say, I was ready to unlock some keys myself. I pre-fished this lake and checked six different areas and decided on the best of the choices for the next mornings outing. I checked in with Randy the night before, and off we headed to the main lake areas, where we were greeted with many of the Oilman’s’ Tournament field of 275 boaters. We found fish active on soft plastics, watermelon and dark colors……type did not seem to matter. Most fish were caught with a T-rig, C-Rig, and a finesse rig.
Big Bass honors went to Ervin Woodard with a nice 3.02 lb Bass. It comes from reliable information that Ervin traveled far up the Colorado River to find this healthy fish. Others traveled far up the River in search of untouched green-gods, but did not fare that well, overall. When all was said and done, the group of Cen-Tex men caught a few fish, but not the quality of fish that OH Ivie has lived up to in the past.
The club’s next event is scheduled for May 7, 2005 @ the Stillhouse-Hollow Lake. Travel time will be lite………so everyone should be prepared to bring in some of this lake’s finest fish. Recent reports have included 20lb tournament stringers coming from this fishery, so come prepared for some “bass” action!
Cen-Tex’s next monthly meeting is set for May 2, 2005 at the VFW in Morgan’s Point, Texas near Lake Belton. Please plan on attending this meeting, as we plan to discuss the possibility of running a on-going tournament event @ Stillhouse, among other important issues.
1st Elton Brock / Randy Fleeman 15.07lbs
2nd Ervin Woodard / Greg Watson 8.00lbs
3rd Chris Koski / Kent Salsbury 7.13lbs
Big Bass: Ervin Woodard 3.2 lbs
Big Stringer: Elton Brock 10.07lbs
MAY
LAKE STILLHOUSE HOLLOW TOURNAMENT - MAY 05
Greetings, to all my fellow Cen-Tex BassHunters Club members, as the month of May rolls forward. What a fishery…….beautiful Lake Stillhouse, still producing quality fish and right in our own backyard.
This month, our gents found loads of fish, for the most part…….and plenty of short fish were noticeably present as well. The first place team of Jeff “G-Man” Giarrizzo and his young protégé Dan Angie found the crankbait bite to be what the fish were anticipating for the day. Others found that the fish were certainly biting soft plastics in watermelon colors. The fish were in a post-spawn phase, and tempted to taste those Cen-Tex morsels in several areas of the lake. Most found success around the grassy areas of the lake.
Many of you have noticed a lot of new faces and when you get the time, introduce yourself to these future Cen-Tex Basshunters. We are a proud group and let them all know just how happy you are to have them in our club.
A shake up on the leader board was due to happen, and Jeff “G-Man” is now on top in the Cen-Tex Angler of the year race, with the rest of the pack coming up close for those honors at the end of the year. Jeff is an awesome fisherman, and if you get the opportunity to grace his boat….then you are in for a “guided” fishing trip. I know that I have learned a lot from Jeff, and really look forward to getting the opportunity to fish with him again. Your Club President is still on top of the BASS leader board, with some others coming close. Randy is mighty handy with the “stick” as well, and if you get a ride “in ole’ yellow” then hold on….to your hat.
Big Bass honors went to Marshall Wayment with a nice 5.12 lb Bass. Marshall caught this fish on a Carolina rig soft plastic, fished in the grass. The Big Stringer went to Jeff’s fishing partner and protégé for the day, Dan Angie with a hefty 17lb 3oz sack of Stillhouse green gods. Congratulations to all, and on to the next club event @ Lake Limestone near Grosbeck, Texas. The club’s next event is scheduled for June 11, 2005.
Limestone really is an impressive fishery, with loads of timber, boat docks, grass, and yesssssss…..lily pads. Come prepared to do battle with some of this lakes toads. This time of the year, will find the bass in schools and loaded on structure, ready for you to put your favorite offering in their face. There are many areas to fish, so if you get the chance, go and discover this lake for yourself.
Cen-Tex’s
next monthly meeting is set for June 6th, 2005 at the VFW in Morgan’s Point,
Texas near Lake Belton. Please plan on attending this meeting, as we move
forward to planning the events for the upcoming months.
1st Jeff “G-Man” Giarrizzo / Dan Angie 32.07lbs
2nd Marshall Wayment / Paul Hartwell 20.15lbs
3rd Bruce Davis / Kyle Kirkes 18.14lbs
Big Bass: Marshall Wayment 5.12 lbs
Big Stringer: Dan Angie 17.03lbs
JUNE
LAKE LIMESTONE TOURNAMENT - JUNE 05
Cen-Tex Basshunters traveled the roads of Central Texas once again, to find a bountiful fishery to the East. Lake Limestone was kind to most who visited it’s waters. The lake was at a good level, the water was as clear as I have witnessed it in many a year, the weather cooperated. What more can you ask for?
The tally of fish at the end of our day was a telling divide of those who captured the opportunities and those who will look forward to better days of fishing opportunities……..myself included. The fish were caught in a variety of manners, as we are a diverse group of anglers………..with reports of catches in 1ft of water or less and as deep as 15-18 ft (Mr. Fleeman). Many reported catching their creel with soft plastics and topwaters.
Myself and Jeff went to check out the fishery the week before and after boating a few fish, ran smack dab into the biggest school of whites I have encountered to date. Well, needless to say…..we boated all the whites we could before Mother Nature ran us off the lake in a thunderstorm. I enjoyed some “Jeff” cooking, and family Giarrizzo conversation later in the evening.
Many of you have noticed a lot of new faces and when you get the time, introduce yourself to these future Cen-Tex Basshunters. We are a proud group and let them all know just how happy you are to have them in our club.
Big Bass honors went to Bruce Davis with a nice 4.07 lb Bass. The Big Stringer went to your club President, Mr. Randy Fleeman with a hefty 18lb 11oz sack of Lake Limestone toads. Congratulations to all, and on to the next club event @ Lake Belton near our own home base. The club’s next event is scheduled for July 09, 2005 from 6pm until 2 am.
Lake Belton really is an impressive fishery, with loads of rocks, rocks…………and well more rocks. J Come prepared to do battle with some of this lakes “little screamers” and an occasional keeper. This time of the year, will find the bass in schools and loaded on structure, ready for you to put your favorite offering in their face. There are many areas to fish, so if you get the chance, go and discover this lake for yourself.
Cen-Tex’s next monthly meeting is set for July 5th, 2005 at the VFW in Morgan’s Point, Texas near Lake Belton. Please plan on attending this meeting, as we move forward to planning the events for the upcoming months.

Big Stringer: Randy Fleeman 18.11lbs
JULY - AUGUST
LAKE BELTON TOURNAMENT - JULY 05
Now on to the summer July and August tournament results……July and August had our mighty group headed to local waters…..whew what a relief from the gas shock! First up, was Lake Belton where we fished from 6pm until 2 am. Plenty of fish were brought to the scales, most caught on soft plastics in shallow water. Belton is a really nice lake to fish after dark, as the water is mostly wide open, as with any experience on the water….safety is of utmost importance.
1st Dan Watson / Marschell Wayment 13.00lbs
2nd Randy Fleeman / Don Schueteze 10.03lbs
3rd Elton Brock / Jerry Toney 8.05lbs
Big Fish: Bruce Davis 3.12lbs
Big Stringer: Randy Fleeman 8.09lbs
LAKE STILLHOUSE TOURNAMENT - AUG 05
Next up, in August was Lake Stillhouse where we fished from 4 am until 12 noon. It was either feist or famine out there......with many of the local natives doing the feisting. Fish were caught on a variety of soft plastics, and a few on topwaters and crankbaits. Grass was the key area to fish.
1ST William Taggart / Clarence Mason 20.02lbs
2nd Jeff Giarrizzo / Joe Howard 17.04lbs
3rd Dan Watson / Jason Perrago 15.10lbs
Big Fish: Jeff Giarrizzo 4.03lbs

More Club News
This year was a very tough year in the competition factor and everyone fished very hard and we all deserve a big round of applause. We should all be proud of our efforts………and we are all winners in this game of “life”. As I look back over the last year, Cen-Tex Basshunters has seen many new faces. Look around you………one of you will be the leader someday. Continue to work diligently, take care of your responsibilities, and treat your fellow man with respect, and I can assure you that good things will follow. I appreciate everyone that I had the opportunity to fish with, learn from, and help….and I hope each of you have learned something from someone you had the opportunity to share a few hours in the boat with.

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER
LAKE CHOKE CANYON TOURNAMENT - OCT 05
October started the month off just right with a trip to
beautiful Choke Canyon in Three Rivers, Texas. What a great place! And the
fishing was excellent….and what else can you say about the food, other than
very, very, very good! Chef Kenny brought out his culinary skills once again to
show all those new faces what we all really love about going on two-day
tournaments.
The fish were active for the most part, however hampered some due to the
changing weather conditions. Still, there were those that were able to find the
“loads” of fish to be had, and others gained valuable knowledge of the lake for
upcoming years. Our very own “Big Bass” of the year, to date was landed at Choke
Canyon by Stuart Schoppert @ a whopping 9.06 lbs. Bruce Davis led the way with
individual standings bringing in 9 fish for an even 30lbs. Fish were caught on
soft plastics, top waters, and crankbaits in a variety of depths…….depending on
the area of the lake fished. 25 members fished and 2 guests, those being Bill
Davis, Bruce’s Dad….and Carl Fox, Sr., being Carl’s Dad.

ROADRUNNER TOURNAMENT - NOV 05
November brought a delightful result as well, with members fishing Stillhouse, Belton, Bastrop and Fayette County. Mixtures of results were tallied at the Midway meeting point @ 5pm, and several teams bringing in the double digit weights. Jeff “G-Man” Giarrizzo and Jeff Vernon edged everyone with their first place catch of 38.08 lbs from Fayette County. The road runner tournaments are a great way to really shine from the lake you know best and can accumulate some weight points on the tally board fast. Keep this in mind for your next year’s tournament road runner selection.
1st Jeff “G-Man” Giarrizzo /
Jeff Vernon 38.08
2nd Elton Brock / Doc Stutes 34.02
3rd Randy Fleeman / William Tagert 27.06
Big Stringer: Jeff Giarrizzo ….....22.00
